With almost 300 days of sunshine a year and mild temperatures throughout autumn and winter, Malta's climate is typical of the Mediterranean and is strongly influenced by the sea. Annual rainfall is low, averaging 568mm a year.
In May, the average air temperature is around 20˚C and the average sea temperature is 19˚C, which gradually rises as the month progresses. Malta enjoys around 10 hours of sunshine each day in May, which is considerably higher than many other parts of central and northern Europe at this time of year.
